We have started our new whole class text ‘Toby and the Great Fire of London’ this week. We have focused on the reading skill prediction. There were amazing predictions happening around what may happen next in the text, using what we have read so far to help us.
Our classroom was filled with lots of yellow. We each created a sunshine to show how unique we all are, describing what makes us unique. We also created a window with the weather that reflects how we feel inside.
The class have continued to read The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas and have been focusing on inference and retrieval skills this week. There have been some deep discussions and answers given about the characters’ pursuit for friendship.
Creating a love of reading early is fundamental to our approach to reading at St Mary’s. Our new Reception pupils are certainly immersed in a world on books with Miss Gulliver.
This week, we have practiced inference, retrieval and summary skills.
Pupils in Year Two are consolidating their knowledge and building fluency before moving on to whole class reading later this term.

We really enjoyed going to Barnsley Library this week! We listened to a fantastic story being read and we were able to explore the whole range of books!
We love it when the Year Six librarians fill the shelves with mystery books! We can’t wait to see who is inspired to read a mystery book.
Our Year Four children are great fans of David Walliams and desperate to read his book collection so we stocked up the shelves with some new copies. We will be going to see the Demon Dentist at Bradford theatre in a few weeks too!
We used our reading skill ‘retrieval’ to help us learn all about who Florence was and the work she did.
We listen to each other and help each other when words are tricky!
